Sweets
Full disclosure here: my sister and I love sweets of all kind. Blame it on our Swiss grandfather who was a baker. So there are tons of pictures of all the sweet meats
and bon bons we tasted and very few of the savory items. Sorry.
Trdlo in Prague
Our cinnamon infused fried dough was filled with Nutella & soft ice. Youza, it was so filling that this ended up being dinner.
Paczki in Krakow
Rose jelly filled donuts—get the original glazed, they are the best. The fancier ones look good
but were way too sweet even for us.
Gelarto Rose in Pest
Don't make the mistake of getting it in a dish like I did—the whole point is to get a cone with the ice cream shaped like a flower! Rookie move.
Cold Fruit Soup in Buda
Cherries in cream—it's not really supposed to be a dessert, but it tasted like one! We got this at a Soviet style cafeteria, similar to the Milk Bars in Poland. I loved these types of eateries mainly because you could see what you were ordering.
Fruit Dumplings in
Stramberk, Slovakia
Dumplings, fresh berries and powdered sugar. This was so filling that I didn't have room for the famous Stramberk Ears. Also fried dough in—you guessed it—the shape of ears.
Cream Cake in Lake Bled, Slovenia
Self explanatory. Notice the fork is made of bamboo. Recycling is a big deal in Slovenia! And this was my favorite dessert of the whole trip. My sister and I made the mistake of splitting this. But at dinner we each ordered our own.
Savories
Pilsner in Prague
I'm counting beer as a savory because, as I pointed out earlier, I was too busy eating to take pictures of my food. During this meal we had Czech dumplings, which are different from Polish or Hungarian.
Cabbage Strudel in Budapest
Go to Első Pesti Rétesház and get them. Our local guide Monica recommended them and it sounded yucky, but they were delicious. And you can also get a sweet one for dessert.
Sausage in a Bun in Ljubljana
Jana arranged this for us: hearty local sausage on bread with mustard and horse radish. Very traditional Slovenian fare also served with a frog's leg appetizer. Yes, local frogs.
More Beer in Prague
This is my sister enjoying the darker beer. This was also our first meal together as a group. We tried to remember names but mostly we just enjoyed the beer, the food and the music.
